Ground cover

The percentage of material, other than bare ground, covering the land surface. It may include live and dead standing vegetation, litter, cobble, gravel, stones, bedrock, and cryptogams. Ground cover plus bare ground would total 100 percent. [Source: USDA National Plant Materials Manual]
