« Back to Glossary Index

A serious condition resulting when an animal ingests forage containing a high nitrate concentration. Rumen bacteria convert nitrate to nitrite; nitrites usually are converted to other forms of nitrogen but, if not, will compete with the oxygen-carrying mechanism in the blood, resulting in suffocation.
