(1) A layer of dead plant material on the soil surface. (2) An artificial layer of material, such as plastic or paper, on the ground surface. (3) Cultural practice of placing rock, straw, paper, plastic, or other material on the soil surface. Commonly used to improve surface conditions to establish desired vegetation.
