Water present beneath Earth’s surface in soil pore spaces and in the fractures of rock formations. (This water is distinguished from surface water, which is found on the surface of the Earth in wetlands, creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes.)

Groundwater may emerge to become surface water from springs, which may be found above ground or below the surface of water bodies.
